we buy lists with custom information on them, and I need to add custom fields to the database. How can I create custom fields for leads - they are not contacts at this point.

how to work with leads and custom fields

Hi Mike,
Leads don't have access to the folders tab through the interface. This is because ConcourseSuite treats leads as an unknown, until they've been converted into a concrete Contact or Account.
With that said the possibility to attach custom fields (folders) does exist, because a lead is stored as a Contact with the isLead status set to true (and a few other fields that are interpreted in a lead specific way), but everything else from the contact module is reusable.
So if you create a Folder in the Admin tool for a contact with all the custom data fields you need. The custom fields can be attached to any lead you create, you'll just need to make sure that the lead has a first and last name so when converting it to account the folders will stay attached to the converted contact record.
Since this functionality is not supported in the interface it will need to be done through the XML HTTP API, portlet, or other means.
One last caveat custom field data is only viewable through the application in a folder (or a custom portlet), so it's not available for creating campaigns, performing searches of contacts, or elsewhere.

WHAT!! you can't work with a custom field? that's just amazing that it has not been implemented in what is being marketed as a mature product.
So what you are saying is if one were to import leads, and concourse does not have a field - so a custom field had to be created, let's say "graduation date", you could not use graduation date for any queries, campaigns etc?
is that on a roadmap somewhere?
