How can duplicate contact imports be prevented?

I usually import contacts into the system. Some of the contacts on my .csv files already exist in the system. Is there a way to prevent import of already existing contacts from these lists?

i also often import contacts from .csv file to Centric CRM.
it seems that Centric CRM hasn't the check mechanism.

i suggest that Centric CRM need to develop the function about merge duplicate contacts, leads and account etc.

I think there is a check for Accounts. The Account Contacts Import verifies to see if an account with the name already exists. If it exists, then the contact imported is associated with the existing account. Otherwise a new Account and its Contact are imported.

I guess the rationale behind allowing duplicate contact records is that 2 users can know a John Doe and one user's john doe might be different from the other user's john doe. Contact module allows you to add 2 contacts with the same names.

Thanks for your suggestion. I agree that a merge tool is necessary and I believe there is a record merge functionality planned in the 5.0 roadmap.

Yes, it would be a plus if you can provide a check box with an option that allows one to eliminate duplicates during contact imports if one wishes to.
