Weather Portlet Display?

7/12/2009 7:13 PM EDT

When I upgraded from EAP to 1.0, the weather no longer displayed in project profiles. The same occurs after updating to 1.3 (and re-indexing).

If this is something temporary I didn't want to raise it as an issue. Is the weather portlet disabled in these builds?

When 1.0 came out we turned off the Yahoo Weather Portlet to meet their terms of use. The weather feeds are provided by yahoo free of charge but for use by individuals and non-profit organizations for personal, non-commercial uses only.

I haven't looked into this since. Are there any commercial arrangements that can be made to get the weather back? paid or unpaid?

The answer may be NOAA.

I like the NOAA idea - our tax dollars at work.

It's at least a nice-to-have feature. Our local economy is based on tourism, with most visitors within a half day's drive. With shorter vacations the norm, weather seems to determine when people visit.

I haven't seen any requests yet for a configurable RSS consumer portlet. Is that under consideration or should I add it to Ideas?

(Sorry I don't see a way to mark this topic as answered...)

Alpha 2.0 has a new RSSPortlet. It's in the source now, and will be available in a 2.0 alpha release.

Usage:

<portlet name="RssPortlet" timeout="5" class="detailed-list " cache="900">

Suffolk News

http://www.wavy.com/feeds/rssFeed?siteId=20003&obfType=RSS_FEED&categoryId=30382>
]]
<limit>5</limit>
<showDescription>false</showDescription>
</portlet>

Needs a little testing as to handling the HTML output.
